A well-dressed man asked me to help find an address on his map at Deák Square. While both my hands held the map, someone else reached into my jacket. I lost my phone. If a stranger asks for directions with a map, keep walking.

The meter jumped every few seconds, like it was on a timer, and a 15-minute ride came to 14,000 HUF — Bolt quoted 4,200. When I complained he suddenly spoke no English and pointed at the meter. Use Bolt or Fő Taxi, never street cabs.

A girl on Váci Street suggested a "typical Hungarian bar". Inside, hostesses ordered "champagne" every five minutes. The final bill was €1,100 and the door staff escorted us to an ATM. Known clip joint — never enter bars with touts.

I used the standalone ATM near Keleti station. A week later there were two withdrawals in Romania. A skimmer plus camera had been fitted on the machine. Use ATMs inside bank branches in Budapest.
