Auto driver near Connaught Place claimed the meter was broken and charged 800 rupees for a 2 km ride — the metered fare is around 80. He drove in circles first so it would "look" longer. Always insist on the meter or book an Uber auto.

A tout claimed the east gate was "closed for VIPs" and that only the south gate was open, offering a rickshaw there for 500 rupees. All gates were open and the east gate was a five-minute walk. Never believe touts about ticket gates.

The "gem certification scheme" shop showed us certificates from a lab we'd never heard of. "Rubies" at $400 tested as colored glass at a jeweler in Delhi. The driver's commission scheme is famous in Jaipur. Buy gems only from licensed stores.

The marble inlay "factory outlet" near the Taj charged triple what the same pieces cost in Agra's Sadar Bazaar. The "workshop demonstration" is designed to guilt you into buying. The craftsmen are real; the tourist price is not.
